About the Instructor:
Known for her soulful and personal approach to portraiture, Cheryl Jacobs has the unusual ability to bring out the intensity in her subjects, young and old. Her masterful use of B&W film and natural light give her prints a depth uncommon in today's digital world. Her distinctive style of fine art portraiture is instantly recognizable.
Above all, Cheryl values the opportunity to form bonds with those she photographs, believing that the portrait is simply a side effect of a strong human connection. That belief is the key to her ongoing success, which now extends to commercial and editorial work, writing, and numerous fine art projects. Her unusual printing techniques and teaching methods have been spotlighted by Kodak's ProPass Magazine, and her workshops have received rave reviews worldwide.
"In 2006, I attended a workshop with Cheryl Jacobs Nicolai. That workshop revolutionized my photography and touched my heart in a significant way. What I learned from Cheryl laid a solid foundation for my photography, especially in the area of working with natural light. She also taught me how to respect the people I photograph, no matter what their age, and to make a real connection with people and draw them out into the photograph. I shed quite a few tears at that workshop, as did others. It was healing in a lot of ways as Cheryl offered us permission to be ourselves and develop our own voice and style. I am incredibly grateful for that experience and highly recommend her workshops."

"I think the best part of my experience was talking to someone with a totally different perspective from mine and the ladies I did her workshop with. I thought at first the fact that CJ shoots only black & white and only with film (gasp!) was going to be a negative, but turns out, that different perspective is just what we all needed. I also gained tons of practical knowledge about lighting and loved getting to then practice those techniques with her there. Also, the short website critiques she did were SO helpful, and enabled me look at my own work with new eyes."

"I had the true pleasure of working with Ms. Nicolai's workshops, as a model. Having worked with a variety of photographers in recent history, there was certainly a relaxed and very enjoyable air to the experience. Several photographers worked with me, in turn, and I was treated to a delightful experience with each. Cheryl must be delivering her secret techniques for developing instant rapport with subjects, because I haven't had nearly that much fun working with other professional photographers."

"I can't say enough about CJ Nicolai's workshop. Early in my photography career, it was CJ that allowed me the courage to just be...and to believe in myself, to take my photography to the next level. CJ's workshop is not only informative, it's honest, real and personal. I enjoyed the workshop so much, I hosted one the following year. Seriously, all you have to do is read this. CJ and her photography skills are amazing...as is her workshop!"
