About the Instructor:
Known for her soulful and personal approach to portraiture, Cheryl Jacobs has the unusual ability to bring out the intensity in her subjects, young and old. Her masterful use of B&W film and natural light give her prints a depth uncommon in today's digital world. Her distinctive style of fine art portraiture is instantly recognizable.
Above all, Cheryl values the opportunity to form bonds with those she photographs, believing that the portrait is simply a side effect of a strong human connection. That belief is the key to her ongoing success, which now extends to commercial and editorial work, writing, and numerous fine art projects. Her unusual printing techniques and teaching methods have been spotlighted by Kodak's ProPass Magazine, and her workshops have received rave reviews worldwide.
In 2004, I began teaching workshops based on this philosophy. While photographers could find workshops on lighting, composition, Photoshop, and every special effect under the sun, the most important aspects of portraiture were being neglected.
I believe strongly that the most powerful portraits are the ones that reflect both the character of the sitter and the voice of the photographer. It's about understanding and empathy, and valuing the human connection.
In my workshops, I teach a careful balance between the psychological, artistic, and technical aspects of portraiture, developing each course specifically for the individuals who will be attending. No two workshops are ever alike.
Whether you're an amateur or a seasoned pro, a digital or film shooter, a visual learner or a hands-on learner, you'll fit right in. If you are looking for a workshop to ignite, inspire, guide, and challenge you, I would love to meet you.

"I truly believe that what I do is not about pictures on paper. It's about making a connection. The portrait is a side effect."
